Our History

In 1975, at the request of the Bishop of the Diocese of Mangochi, the Canossian Sisters began a girl’s hostel for the Balaka Secondary School. Over time, this slowly evolved into an educational enterprise, which in 1986 became the Bakhita Distance Education Centre (DEC). In 1999 the DEC was closed. The distance education centre was upgraded. We moved to a larger complex and developed into a fully-fledged Private Secondary School to ensure quality education at a secondary level.

January 2003 marked the opening of the Bakhita Girls Secondary School, with the first group of 30 Form 1 students and nine staff members. Since that time the school has grown to over 600 students, who comprise 3 streams for each form and board full-time on campus.

We seek to not only impart academic instruction, but in a spirit of love and service, to work for the holistic development of our students – intellectual, moral, spiritual, emotional, physical and social.

Our Mission

Our mission statement is “empowering youth to be agents of change for a better society”. Inspired by the Canossian Charism, we commit ourselves to being a compassionate, loving and educative community working for the integral growth of young people. Empowering them to assume responsibilities at all levels – personal, family and society – and enabling them to live lives of dignity and decorum in a style of humble and gratuitous service to others, especially the needy.
